About Quando: The Quando wine portfolio is made by brothers Fanis and Martin Bruwer on their riverside property in the Robertson wine valley of South Africa. The Bruwer brothers are of French Huguenot descent who arrived from the Loire Valley in South Africa in 1693. The Bruwers were vignerons in France and are after nine generations in South Africa are still vine growers and wine makers in Robertson. Just about all the classic wine cultivars are grown on the property, but only Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvedre and Pinot noir grapes are kept back to make wine from.
The farm boarders the Breede River running through the valley and is enfolded on both side by the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges. A Mediterranean climate with hot summers and balmy breezes from the Indian Ocean in the afternoon help to create the perfect terroir.
The vineyard and soil: The grapes for the Quando Sauvignon Blanc hails from a single vineyard on our farm rooted in four meter deep rich alluvial strata exposed by a receding meander of the Breede River. These deep rich alluvial Table mountain sandstone deposits ensure excellent drainage and the water retention is perfect for Sauvignon blanc not letting the vines go into stress during ripening and losing its flavors. The clones in this vineyard are SB242 and SB. The vines are double Guyot trained to restrict yield to 8 bunches per vine for flavour concentration and grow a denser canopy for fruit preservation.
Vinification: Five different harvests were executed over a period of three weeks to capture different flavour spectrums from the vineyard and build in complexity. All the different parcels were vinified separately with inoculated yeast and kept on its gross lees for 3 months at low temperatures, batonaged every week. The final blend was then made up and bottled. We actually blend from the same vineyard
